Filmmaker Nandita Das assumed that there will be young charming actors to portray Saadat Hasan Manto’s closest friend and charismatic actor Shyam in her dream project Manto. But whom she approached to play said no for the movie. Only talented actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the lead role of Manto.
She tweeted on social media that "Intriguingly, all the 'stars' I approached said 'no' without even reading the script or asking any questions."
Titled ‘No Shyam in Sight’, the column describes the woes Nandita suffered in casting for the character of Shyam and how she got the clarity over the connection between the roles they select and perception of their worth in the market. Besides, finding less orthodox producers and relentless scouting, there was one more issue that I did not anticipate - The casting for the renowned actor and Manto’s closest friend, Shyam. Nanditha wrote.
She further adds, “I thought aspirants who are charming are evinced interest to play the role of Shyam but actors whom I approached, did not like to play the role of Shyam in the fear of second lead while Nawazuddin Siddiqui is seen playing the role of Manto. I want to tell that the Shyam role is not less than Manto in this movie.”
Filmmaker Hansal Mehta upon reading the column, tweeted, "I'm almost relieved that I'm not making the Manto film I'd set out to make. Nobody wanted to play Manto. Nobody wanted to produce it."
