Alok Kumar Verma who is currently holding the position of Police Commissioner for the city of Delhi is appointed by the Prime Minister Modi government as the new Director for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Alok Kumar Verma who is an IPS Officer of 1997 batch, served in the premier agency in the past.
According to an official spokesperson of the government, the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Alok Kumar Verma as the new CBI Director for a period of two years. The spokesperson told media that, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Mr. Verma as the new CBI chief for a period of two years.”
The decision to appoint Alok Kumar Verma as the new CBI chief is taken at a meeting of the high power panel that comprises Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India J S Khehar and the leader of the largest opposition party in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, on Monday.
Speaking to the media about the appointment of the new Chief for the premier agency of India, CBI, Mallikarjun Kharge said that, “I had given a note saying that the new CBI chief should be a person with a long experience in the CBI, Lok Ayukta or handling corruption cases, and that is my contention. The Delhi Special Police Establishment Act says clearly that the appointee should have seniority, merit and long experience in dealing with corruption cases.”
The post of the Director for the CBI agency has been vacant since December 2 last year, after the former CBI Director Anil Sinha retired from his position. Later his retirement, Mr. Asthana is given additional charge as the CBI Director by the government.
The earlier positions of Mr Alok include Director General of Tihar Central Jail, DGP in Puducherry and also as DGP in Mizoram.
