The Indian army jawans are now going to get their first ever and the most prerequisite equipment in their complete military uniform, a modern helmet. The helmet which plays a vital role in making a difference between life and death for the army personnel during their military operations is going to be a world class helmet.
According to the sources, the Indian Army has contracted a deal with Kanpur based MKU Industries for about 1.58 lakh helmets that is worth Rs. 170 crore. Being the first large scale order placed by the Indian army, the production of the helmets is going to begin soon. And, the MKU Industries which grabbed the contract said that the delivery of the order will be made within three years.
The new modern helmets which meet the global standards are made to bear the impact of a 9mm bullet in a short range. Moreover, the helmets are also designed to be integrated with communications devices and also are comfortable for the wearer.
While the elite Para Special Forces of the Army are equipped with Israeli OR-201 helmet made of Glass Reinforced Plastic a decade back, the regular soldiers of infantry formations however are provided with helmets made in India that are not so comfortable to wear for the soldiers.
According to the sources, the best and preferred solution for the Indian army soldiers is to get equipped with a bullet proof ‘patka’, particularly during counter insurgency operations. However, even this equipment has its own limitations such that they offer protection to the soldier only on his forehead and on the back of his head, and moreover they are too heavy to bear with a weight of more than 2.5 kilo grams.
